The best time of year — and day — to fly over Marrakech

Why balloons only fly at sunrise

Hot air balloons need calm, cool air to fly safely. Wind speeds are consistently lowest in the hour around sunrise, before the desert floor heats up and starts generating thermals. That's why virtually every operator in Marrakech offers sunrise departures only — it isn't a marketing choice, it's a physics one.

October to April: peak season

This is the most reliable window for clear skies and cool, stable mornings. From November through March, the High Atlas often carries snow, which adds a striking white ridgeline to the view that isn't there in summer. Mornings during this period run 8–15°C at launch, warming quickly once the sun is up.

May to September: still flyable, with caveats

Flights continue through summer, but the window narrows — pilots need to launch earlier to catch the calmest air before the heat builds, so pickup times shift as early as 4:30am. Haze can also soften long-distance visibility on the hottest days, though the core experience (palm groves, kasbahs, close-up Atlas foothills) is unaffected.

Weekday vs. weekend, and how far ahead to book

Availability is tightest around European school holidays (Christmas, Easter, July–August) and long weekends. Booking 1–2 weeks ahead is usually enough outside peak season; during peak season, 3–4 weeks gives you the best choice of tier and departure time.

Our take

If your trip dates are flexible, aim for November through March for the best odds of the Atlas snow view and the most stable weather. If you're travelling in summer, the flight is still worth it — just expect an earlier alarm.
